Annual Exterior Woodwork Maintenance & Care
Always working to enhance and protect your home
At Bishop & Smith, we are committed to delivering the highest standards of exterior decoration. To ensure your property remains protected and looking its best for years to come, we want to share an important update regarding exterior timber paints and how we manage their long-term performance.

Changing Paint Formulations & Extreme Weather
Over the last decade, UK paint manufacturing has undergone significant changes due to environmental regulations, leading to a shift from traditional oil-based products to modern water-based and hybrid systems. While these newer formulations offer lower environmental impact and better colour retention, they behave differently under weather stress.
Compounding this, recent UK summers have brought record high temperatures.
-
Application Standards: Manufacturer guidelines strictly dictate that exterior coatings must be applied between 5°C and 25°C. We rigorously adhere to these technical windows to guarantee proper bonding.
-
Curing Times & Heat Stress: Most modern exterior paints require 7 to 14 days to fully cure and reach maximum durability. Standard manufacturer testing does not account for sustained surface temperatures exceeding 30°C during this delicate curing phase.
Why Annual Maintenance Matters
Natural timber continuously expands and contracts with fluctuations in heat and humidity. Over time, subtle micro-cracks or natural movement in the wood can break the paint seal. Left unaddressed year after year, water penetrates these hairline gaps, leading to timber degradation, flaking, and costly rot.
Reviewing our projects over the last ten years confirms that addressing minor movement early prevents the need for full, costly re-decorations down the line.
Our Annual Exterior Maintenance Service
To protect your investment, we now offer an annual Exterior Joinery Maintenance Inspection & Touch-Up Service.
-
What it covers: A thorough yearly inspection of all exterior decorated woodwork, sealing of micro-splits or exposed joints, localised sanding, and targeted touch-ups to maintain the protective seal.
-
Cost & Terms: £500 + VAT (inclusive of labour; materials are charged separately). Payment is due after the service has been successfully completed.
-
Booking: You can reserve your annual service slot in advance to ensure automatic yearly scheduling.
*Please Note: This is a preventative cosmetic maintenance service designed to catch natural wear early. It does not cover major timber repairs, pre-existing rot, structural failure, or accelerated deterioration caused by exceptional external factors — for example, south-facing joinery subject to relentless direct sun exposure, physical damage, or garden vegetation touching and degrading the woodwork. Annual visits are scheduled within suitable weather windows (5°C–25°C and dry conditions). Additionally, the service fee covers ground-level and standard ladder-accessible work; where specialist equipment or scaffolding is required to safely access high or restricted areas, any associated access costs are excluded.
By catching timber movement early, we preserve the integrity of your exterior woodwork and extend the lifespan of your full decoration work indefinitely.

Thank you for your continued trust in our work.
